YACHT is the creative construction of Portland, Oregon's Jona Bechtolt. YACHT's latest effort,
I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real, is a whimsical, bubbly conglomeration of noises and beats, with lyrics covering a variety of everyday subjects such as consumerism, loose change and repetitive mantras, among other topics.
Bechtolt at times mixes disparate genres of music - bouncy Eurotrance beats mesh with '70s gameshow voiceovers or repetitive sequences eliciting visions of robotic dronehood. Still, he manages to mostly avoid the overwhelming repetitiveness that dooms much electronic music. His work remains unique and fun, and while I can't necessarily imagine listening to the album straight through several times in a row, the individual songs stand alone quite well. If anything, listening to
I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real makes me want to see Bechtolt live and in action - it seems to invite participation and performance rather than simply a passive listening experience.
Standout tracks include “If Music Could Cure What Ails You,” “I Believe in You” and ”See a Penny (Pick It Up).” If, as the saying goes, a penny saved is a penny earned, perhaps it's time you cashed in that change jar and picked up a copy of
I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real.
